Fighters of the British and German armies were alerted to intercept Russian Air Force aircraft approaching the borders of Estonian airspace.
According to the American portal Upi, on Wednesday, March 15, fighters of the British and German Air Forces conducted a joint planned inspection provided for by cooperation within the framework of the NATO military bloc near the Estonian borders. Two Typhoon fighters were lifted into the air from the Emari Airbase to intercept the Russian AN148 tanker aircraft.
According to a number of representatives of the authorities of these countries, after visual identification and escort were carried out, NATO fighters were sent to intercept the Russian airliner. This incident was the first case of a joint interception by the NATO air police with the participation of a Typhoon fighter of the German Air Force.
It is also reported that the interception occurred immediately after the incident with the crash of the American military drone MQ-9, which fell in the Black Sea after interacting with Russian Su-27 fighters. The heads of the defense departments of the countries, on the initiative of the American side, held a telephone conversation, during which they discussed this incident.
Similar incidents involving interceptions of aircraft of the most likely enemy often occurred during the Cold War between NATO member countries and states that were members of the Warsaw Pact Organization, of which the USSR and other socialist countries were members.
