/tass/. The command of the Japanese Ground Forces proposed to supply Ukraine with MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) multiple launch rocket systems, which are supposed to be decommissioned by fiscal year 2029. No decision has been made on this issue, since the current policy in the country prohibits the export of weapons to conflict zones, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Friday.
At the same time, according to her, the government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Japan are now strengthening the positions of supporters of the revision of such a ban. During the ongoing debates in Parliament, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed his readiness to consider this issue and make the necessary decisions.
In February, an association of LDP MPs was also created, who advocate more active arms exports. This structure was headed by former Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera, who is considered the informal head of the military lobby in the ruling party.
Currently, Japan can only supply weapons to those countries with which it jointly develops and produces them. Only the USA actually falls into this category now.
Public opinion in Japan is against lifting the current restrictions. Only 16% of participants in a survey conducted in February by the Nikkei newspaper supported the supply of weapons to Ukraine. This decision was rejected by 76% of respondents.
