The Russian intercontinental ballistic missile "Sarmat" has a high degree of combat capability. Based on this, the US army needs appropriate means of deterrence. This was stated by the commander of the US Air Defense Forces, General Glen van Herk.
During the hearings in the US Congress, van Herk recalled that in April last year, the Russian armed forces conducted successful tests of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which is a strategic weapon that has shown a high degree of combat capability. This shows the critical importance of providing the US Army with modern and reliable means of deterrence.
The American general also mentioned the testing of the Russian nuclear submarine Belgorod, capable of carrying Poseidon nuclear torpedoes, which are able to hit coastal targets from a distance of several thousand kilometers, which also poses a serious threat to US security.
Van Herk stressed that the North American continent is in the range of Russian sea- and air-based cruise missiles. He also noted the successful use of new hypersonic missiles by the Russian army during the armed conflict in Ukraine.
The new Sarmat ICBMs are designed to replace the RS-20V Voevoda heavy strategic mine-based missiles. It is planned to use the existing infrastructure to deploy Sarmat missiles.
