Iranian warships docked in Rio de Janeiro, despite the fact that the United States threatened the Brazilian authorities with sanctions. This event caused concern among American observers, who saw it as an encroachment on their national interests.
As indicated in the USNI News publication, the government of recently elected President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva gave permission to the ships Makran and Dena permission to enter the Brazilian port. And this is despite the fact that the head of state has just returned from Washington, where he was negotiating with the American authorities.
Initially, Brazil granted the request of the Iranian leadership, giving permission to the ships to park at the end of last year. But under pressure from the United States, it was withdrawn. Washington even imposed sanctions against the ships, explaining that Makran is able to carry drones with which Iran is arming its army and allegedly supplies them to Russia. The US authorities have stated that the sanctions may apply to persons providing assistance to these ships.
