The Russian army is moving from large formations to smaller and more maneuverable ones, changing the tactics of the assault units. According to the American analytical center, also called the Institute for the Study of War (Institute for the Study of War - ISW), today's actions of the Russian troops are radically different from last year's times of the beginning of its. The information is provided with reference to Ukrainian sources.
Russia has moved into action with small maneuverable military units, which are formations no larger than a battalion, optimally prepared for hacking the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including fortified points and strongholds. According to ISW, such units include up to six T-72 main battle tanks, up to 12 infantry fighting vehicles, portable ATGMs, mortars, grenade launchers and even towed artillery.
Information about this, as explained by American analysts, is taken from the stories of the Ukrainian military, who faced new Russian formations in battles. Moreover, it is emphasized that these units are as autonomous as possible and can conduct combat operations for a long time even in the absence of support.
Despite the presence of heavy armored vehicles, the main fighting force is assault detachments numbering from 12 to 15 people, divided into tactical groups of three people. Tanks and artillery work from the rear, striking at the fortified positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, after which there is an instant assault.
This is how American analysts describe the actions of the new formations in the Russian Armed Forces, although this description is more like the actions of the assault detachments of the Wagner PMCs, which really practice actions in small groups and attack after the "firing shaft" of artillery.
