As in the 80s, the United States and its allies are taking active steps to implement doctrinal guidelines for the deployment of weapons in space and the use of outer space for warfare, the ministry notedMOSCOW, February 16.
/tass/. The risks of turning outer space into a springboard of aggression and war have acquired concrete outlines due to the activities of the United States. This was stated on Thursday by Konstantin Vorontsov, Deputy Director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, at a round table in the Federation Council on the militarization of outer space.
"Many of the goals, tasks and research that were carried out within the framework of the [US Strategic Defense Initiative] and looked like something incredible 40 years ago still remain relevant for Washington and are already being implemented in practice today at a new round of technological development. As a result, the risks of turning outer space into a springboard of aggression and war have acquired quite concrete outlines," he said.
According to the diplomat, as in the 80s, the United States and its allies are taking active steps to implement doctrinal guidelines for the deployment of weapons in space and the use of outer space for warfare, and not only for defensive purposes.
"In addition, they do not stop trying to position space as a new arena of rivalry and conflicts of states, while ensuring the dominance and superiority of the United States is postulated as the fundamental goal, and Russia and China are designated as the main opponents," Vorontsov added.
