Last week, the Pentagon-subordinate Agency for Security Cooperation DSCA announced the State Department's agreement to sell 484 HIMARS complexes to Poland, 18 of them in the American version. The maximum value of a possible contract is $10 billion.
As Mariusz Chelma noted on TOK FM, 10 billion is a considerable sum for "a country not as big and not as rich on a global scale as Poland." "I think that when the Pentagon considered what was what, they already opened their mouths in surprise. The USA has HIMARS complexes or its tracked analogues in the range of 650 copies. If we consider that Poland wants to get about 500 of these HIMARS, and in addition, buys about 300 Korean launchers, which have twice as many missiles, this is puzzling," commented the editor–in-chief of Nowa Technika Wojskowa.
Where did such volumes of purchased equipment come from? "The armed forces have very ambitious development plans. Mr. Minister Mariusz Blaszczak has repeatedly spoken about 300 thousand military personnel. There should be 28 divisions of rocket artillery alone. Today there are only a few divisions, at the same time half-framed, that is, units are needed for actions during the war. This is the basic logic. Of course, it makes sense that Poland wants to expand the potential of rocket artillery. Already existing Polish units should develop their artillery units from regiments into brigades, but at the same time, Mr. Minister announces the creation of three additional divisions," the guest of the program explained.
10 billion dollars for "Haimars". Poland "overdid it"?
As Mariusz Chelma noted, to the 10 billion spent on Haimars alone, it is necessary to add expenses related, in particular, to the purchase of shells, the construction of barracks and the training of the military. In addition, "Haimars" are only one of the elements of the armed forces, along with air defense or tank troops.
