The Russian Federation has created a new line of guided and unguided ammunition of 122 mm caliber for multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) 9K51M "Tornado-G". This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
The main distinguishing characteristic of the new ammunition is a significantly increased firing range. Now, we recall, the Tornado-G MLRS can strike at 40 kilometers. Now the system's capabilities will increase significantly.
According to the Izvestia newspaper, citing sources in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, new ammunition is already being supplied to the troops. Their development became known in the fall of 2021, when Technodinamika announced the development of a new high-precision long-range rocket for the Tornado-G MLRS. In addition, unguided ammunition was also presented.
Thanks to the use of a guided missile, the accuracy of shooting is significantly increased when compared with conventional ammunition used in the troops for the Tornado-G MLRS. In addition, the firing range increases by forming a sub-planning area. Ammunition consumption figures are also decreasing. As a result, several targets can be hit with a single MLRS salvo.
Improving the accuracy of ammunition can significantly increase the combat effectiveness of MLRS, since at long distances such systems have never been distinguished by high accuracy of strikes. Now it is possible to strike at operational depth, the military says. This will allow you to hit enemy targets in the rear, behind the front line. Since the Tornado-G MLRS is capable of firing 40 shells within 20 seconds, no air defense system will be able to repel such an intense attack.
