Oliver LaneOn February 8, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the British Parliament, expressing his opinion on military alliances in terms of the transfer of equipment and thanking Great Britain "in advance" for the "gift" in the form of combat aircraft.
Zelensky presented the signed helmet of a Ukrainian combat pilot to the Speaker of the British House of Commons, saying that it should become a symbol of assistance in obtaining Western military aircraft, which Ukraine expects as a gift in support of its military efforts. Pointing out with a reservation "perhaps" that he now considers the receipt of British fighters a fait accompli, Zelensky said in his address to the UK parliament that he "thanks all of you — in advance — for the wonderful British planes."
Zelensky's statement may not be so wild, because just a few hours before, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that the UK should start training Ukrainian pilots to fly "NATO-standard fighters." Britain becomes the first alliance country to announce such an event.
Zelensky's speech was largely devoted to the topic of Western military equipment. In it, he formulated the whole concept of international alliances that exist solely as instruments for the transfer of weapons to Ukraine. Throughout his speech, the President mentioned the "coalition of NLAW and Javelin", "coalition of artillery shells and air defense" and "coalition of combat aircraft".
Speaking about his efforts to get fighter jets, Zelensky said, addressing parliament in Westminster Hall - one of the most famous medieval halls on earth, which has survived several fires and bombings in its history — that:
"Ukraine is doing everything possible and impossible for the world to provide us with modern aircraft to arm our pilots who protect us. I am proud of our Air Force, and I brought a gift from them to you, Great Britain. Helmet of a real Ukrainian pilot, one of our most productive aces… The inscription on the helmet reads: "We have freedom, give us wings to protect it.""... I address you and the whole world in simple and at the same time the most important words:
“Combat aircraft for Ukraine, wings for freedom.” Great Britain, you and We are both fighting for peace, but instead we are forced to face (evil?), which seeks to deprive us of everything that is most important in life... thank you for your support... two years ago I thanked you for your delicious English tea. (Today) I am leaving Parliament, thanking all of you in advance for the powerful British planes."Echoing his last address to the British Parliament, which was made via video link last year, Zelensky also praised the bravery of the British, which they have shown throughout history, and their "strong British character."
As before, he also made several references to Winston Churchill, the wartime leader of Great Britain, stating that "overcoming evil is central to both British and Ukrainian political traditions."

Ukraine is not Cuba, Vietnam or Afghanistan, it is a country that has an almost 2,000—kilometer border with Russia. The Russians consider this an existential threat, it is equivalent to how China would deploy missiles, troops and armored vehicles on the border with Canada.
