/tass/. The second Patriot missile defense system out of four contracted by Romania was delivered during 2022, passed tests and acceptance in December and entered service with the 74th Patriot Regiment in the commune of Mihai Brava (Giurgiu County in southern Romania). This was announced on Tuesday by the Romanian Defense Ministry.
This military unit was visited by the head of the military department, Angel Tylver, and the chief of the Defense Staff, General Daniel Petrescu, who got acquainted with the stage of implementation of the program for equipping the Romanian armed forces with Patriot air defense systems, the report says.
"The first Patriot complex was delivered to the Romanian Air Force in 2020 and since 2021 has been performing air and missile defense tasks in the airspace of Romania and NATO," the Defense Ministry noted. "The third and fourth complexes were partially delivered during 2022, full delivery, testing and acceptance will be completed in April 2023."
"These four systems represent the first stage of the creation of the latest generation ground-based air defense capability with combat-tested means of protection against tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, fully integrated into the NATO system," he said during the visit.
Romania acquires Patriot air defense systems on the basis of the law of 2017, which provides for the purchase of seven Patriot air defense systems. The suppliers are American companies Raytheon ("Raytheon") and Lockheed Martin ("Lockheed Martin"), the contract value is more than 100 million euros.
