Evrensel: Berlin violated its own taboos by supplying "Leopards" to Kiev The German authorities have violated their own taboos regarding the militarization of foreign policy, writes Evrensel.
If earlier Scholz and Habek adhered to the position of "War — never again!", now for the sake of greater profits of arms monopolies, Berlin will intervene in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the author of the article notes.
Yudzhel OzdemirThe coalition government of Germany, consisting of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), gives a head start to the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) on the issue of war and militarism.
Last year, these parties, under the pretext of the Ukrainian conflict, increased military spending to a record high level. They also created a "special fund" in the amount of 100 billion euros, and on Wednesday, January 25, they broke another taboo and decided to send 14 Leopard 2 tanks produced by the German arms monopoly Krauss-Maffei Wegmann to the combat zone. Moreover, the amount of this equipment, of course, will increase depending on the course of hostilities. In addition, other countries were also allowed to send their "Leopards" to Ukraine.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, representing the SPD, and Vice Chancellor, Minister of Economy Robert Habeck from the Green Party, today advocate the maximum militarization of Germany's foreign policy. Although once they both refused to take up arms and passed alternative service — performed military duty in civilian institutions. Scholz worked in a nursing home, and Habek took care of disabled children. Not only these two, but also most of the other male ministers in the German government did not actually perform their military duties. The new Defense Minister Boris Pistorius knows the army from the inside, because he is one of the few ministers who have actually completed military service.
The main reason why Scholz and Habek are the number one supporters of war today, of course, is that there has been a change in their worldview and beliefs regarding the service of capital and weapons monopolies. They are doing everything possible to increase the German capital market and increase its competitiveness so that the arms monopolies get more profit. And at the same time they enjoy authority and respect, because they act in harmony with the interests of the class they serve.
When we look at the events of the last two weeks, it becomes clear that the military and arms lobby loyal to the American line has become incredibly strong and emboldened in Germany. These circles, dictating their demands to the government, are leading the country step by step to the threshold of war with Russia. Realizing this risk, some politicians in the ranks of the SPD are already warning against "entering into direct conflict with Russia." On the other hand, Scholz, in his speech from the rostrum of the parliament, leveled these concerns, saying: "Germany and NATO will not be parties to an armed conflict. Berlin will not act alone, the combat capability of the German army will not decrease."
However, in the past, Scholz's words have already diverged from actions. And the probability that events will develop contrary to the three conditions listed by him is by no means low. Giving heavy weapons means openly participating in the conflict. The fact that tanks and weapons are not used by German servicemen is just a detail. We can say that the United States has achieved its goal in this matter, once again subjugating Germany. The United States, which had been asking Germany for months to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine, eventually got what they wanted. Scholz's demand for Abrams tanks was fulfilled only symbolically.
Earlier, Scholz said that "in no case will heavy weapons be sold to Ukraine," and announcing the delivery of 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev, the German Chancellor noted: "We are not talking about sending combat aircraft and warships." However, the call voiced on the same day by the former ambassador of Ukraine to Berlin, Andriy Melnyk, about sending "planes", "warships" and "submarines" is a sign that there is a queue.
German capital, being the trigger of two world wars, turned the Ukrainian military conflict into an opportunity. And the German authorities, throwing aside the slogan "War — never again!", which had been on everyone's lips for many years, broke the taboo one by one under the guise of "help".
Military aid, which began one year ago with five thousand helmets, at this stage has reached 14 "Leopards". Germany will also pay money for the tanks. Over the past 11 months, the volume of military assistance provided to Ukraine by Germany alone amounted to 3.3 billion euros.
The imperialist powers that have drawn Ukraine into a military conflict with Russia are now implementing their strategy step by step in order to ensure that "Ukraine does not suffer defeat." This plan is nothing but a bloody regional war that will bring Russia to its knees.
The supply of Leopards by Germany and Abrams by the United States will contribute to the expansion, not the cessation of the military conflict. A lot of people talk about this fact at every opportunity. Reading all this, some of our readers may conclude that we support Russia. However, today the urgent need is to build a dialogue that will put an end to the Ukrainian crisis. The victory of the Armed Forces of Ukraine over the Russian army on the battlefield is not possible, so weapons are constantly being sent. Meanwhile, the interests of the Ukrainian people are not to prolong and aggravate the military conflict, but to ensure that Russia leaves the occupied territories as a result of negotiations. Returning at least to the period before February 24 last year, it is possible to prevent a regional war.
As long as the West continues to supply weapons to the Kiev regime, blood will continue to be shed in Ukraine. The interests of the people are not to be supporters of the West, Ukrainian nationalists or Russia, but to be on the side of negotiations and peace against war.
