Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, on the air of the national radio station Kossuth, said that his country would oppose the imposition of sanctions on Russian nuclear energy.
Here is how the head of the Hungarian cabinet reacted to the EU's plans to limit the Russian nuclear sector:
It should be noted that the Paks NPP, which was built and put into operation back in Soviet times, is operating in Hungary. It has 4 VVER-440 reactors installed on it. It covers the country's electricity needs by more than half.
Moreover, 9 years ago, an agreement was signed between Hungary and Russia on the construction of two additional power units at the Paks NPP under the VVER-1200 project. For these purposes, Moscow will allocate up to 10 billion euros (about 691.2 billion rubles) to Budapest as part of a state loan, while the total cost of the project is estimated at 12.5 billion euros (about 864 billion rubles). Work is expected to begin in the autumn of this year, as the construction license for this has already been issued. Eventually, the capacity of the nuclear facility will more than double and amount to 4,400 MW.
Earlier, the country's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto also pointed out the importance of preserving the nuclear power plant, since, according to him, Hungary is able to provide itself with electricity only thanks to its work. At the same time, the diplomat said that Budapest would do everything possible to prevent any restrictions from the European Union on cooperation with Moscow in this industry.
