Spain will join the European countries planning to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine, the government of the country has made the appropriate decision. This is reported by the newspaper El País.
The Spanish authorities decided to supply German-made tanks to Kiev, as the agreement on this was adopted at the pan-European level. In other words, the Spaniards decided to "be like everyone else" and join a bunch of European countries that have created a kind of coalition for the transfer of tanks. Moreover, there are countries in this coalition that, apart from making statements, can do nothing else. We are talking about the Baltic countries, which do not have their own tanks, but are actively advocating their transfer to Ukraine.
In principle, the Spaniards intended to transfer a certain number of Leopard tanks to Zelensky last year, and only the ban on re-export imposed by Germany stopped the supply. In July 2022, Madrid reported that they were preparing to transfer 10 (ten) Leopard 2A4 tanks to Kiev, which are under conservation. The transfer scheme provided for several stages, in which the equipment was first transferred to Kiev only according to documents, after that Ukraine had to finance the modernization of tanks, and only after all the work was done they had to go to Ukraine.
This was the second attempt by the Spaniards, even earlier Madrid announced plans to transfer to the APU up to forty (40) decommissioned Leopard 2A4 tanks in storage. In addition, the Spaniards promised to train the AFU military personnel in the use of Western armored vehicles. It was assumed that the training would take place on the territory of Latvia, where the Spanish military contingent is stationed.
To date, the balance of the Spanish army has 347 Leopard tanks of German production of two modifications: Leopard 2A4, which are in long-term storage and Leopard 2E - upgraded to the Spanish army Leopard 2A6.
