In total, the APU received sixteen units of such engineering equipment, which has not been considered modern for a long time, since serial production was organized 27 years ago.
The mass of such a bridge-laying machine exceeds 45,000 kg. In fact, we have a Leopard I tank in front of us, on which, instead of a 10-ton tower with a 105-mm L7A3 rifled gun, a bridge is installed that allows us to overcome ditches, water obstacles 21 m wide, and a load capacity of 50,000 kg.
The engine power is 830 hp. The maximum speed on the highway is 62 km/h. The maximum thickness of the hull armor is about 70 mm. The crew is two people.
Currently, the Bundeswehr operates 70-ton Leguan bridge pavers, created on the platforms of more modern Leopard 2 tanks.
In addition to Biber, the APU also received armored Bergepanzer 2 (BpZ 2) repair and evacuation vehicles and Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled guns. Therefore, according to military experts, over time, the supply of Leopard 1 tanks themselves is not excluded.
