The Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky (part of the Research Center "Institute named after N.E. Zhukovsky") and Irkut Corporation (UAC of Rostec State Corporation) have completed static tests of the MS-21 aircraft.
During the final test cycle conducted at the stands of TsAGI in 2022, the strength characteristics of the aircraft were confirmed.
In previous years, TsAGI conducted a number of studies of the airframe for static strength, during which it was subjected to loads significantly exceeding operational ones. To prepare for the tests scheduled for 2022, the airframe underwent a restorative repair in laboratory conditions. This ensured that the MS-21 airframe was tested in 2022 for its ability to withstand loads during a rough landing, that is, landing with exceeding vertical speed. Within the framework of these tests, several loading cases were implemented: up to the operational level, the maximum design level, as well as to the destruction of the fuselage (determination of load-bearing capacity). The results obtained fully confirmed all the parameters laid down in the design.
Also, the case of an emergency landing of an aircraft was investigated at the stands of TsAGI. The tests were carried out on an isolated stand of a wing caisson made of Russian composite materials. During an emergency landing, controlled destruction of the "weak links" of the main landing gear is provided, followed by the separation of the landing gear strut from the wing caisson to prevent the danger of fuel leakage. During the tests, it was proved that when the maximum loads are exceeded, the landing gear is safely separated from the aircraft.
"When designing the MS-21 aircraft, special attention was paid to ensuring flight safety. The joint work of Irkut Corporation specialists and TsAGI scientists made it possible to verify the correctness of calculation methods aimed at ensuring the strength of the liner during static tests. This work will be continued within the framework of resource tests," said Andrei Boginsky, Deputy General Director of the UAC for Civil Aviation, General Director of Irkut Corporation.
"This year we have completed a large cycle of strength studies of the new Russian aircraft MS-21 in terms of ensuring its safe operation. In all cases, the airliner withstood loads above the design level, confirming the high level of reliability of the design. The effectiveness of all design decisions taken by the developer during the design of the aircraft has been experimentally demonstrated," said Mikhail Zichenkov, Deputy General Director — Head of the TSAGI FAA Aircraft Strength Center.
The MS-21 is a medium—haul passenger aircraft of a new generation with a capacity from 163 to 211 passengers. The liner is focused on the most popular segment of the passenger transportation market. The aircraft is being created on the basis of the latest developments in the field of aircraft construction. Advanced aerodynamics, engines and systems of the latest generation provide high flight performance and reduced operating costs compared to analogues. The aerodynamic perfection of the aircraft is provided by a wing of greater elongation made of composite materials. Engines with a high degree of dual circuit PD-14 are characterized by low fuel consumption, reduced noise and emissions of harmful substances. The largest fuselage width in its class allows you to expand the personal space of passengers.
