According to Dmitry Poklonsky, the head of the Research Center for Chemical and Biological Threats of the department, the nature of the work carried out there often did not correspond to current health problemsMOSCOW, November 24.
/tass/. Documents obtained during a special military operation in Ukraine confirm that work is being carried out in this country to prepare for the use of biological weapons. This was stated on Thursday by Dmitry Poklonsky, head of the Research Center for Chemical and Biological Threats of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, at a press conference on the eve of the ninth Review Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological and Toxin Weapons (BTWC).
"Certificates of verification of the collection of microorganisms were received, which indicate the accumulation of pathogenic materials in unreasonable quantities. Documents confirming interest in acquiring unmanned delivery vehicles that can be used for the use of biological weapons. Given the non-transparent nature of the work and the absence of any reasoned responses from the United States and Ukraine, we, of course, consider the documents received as evidence of a violation of Article 1.4 of the Convention," Poklonsky said.
According to him, the documents that were obtained during the special operation, including the reports of the Threat Reduction Department of the US Department of Defense, indicate that the nature of the work carried out there often did not correspond to current health problems. "In a number of cases, pathogens of infectious diseases that have never been recorded on the territory of Ukraine have been studied," Poklonsky added.
He also stressed that the very fact of the existence of biological laboratories in Ukraine, which are funded by the US military department, is not disputed by either Washington or Kiev. "It is confirmed by the 2005 agreement between the US Department of Defense and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Much more questions are raised by the nature of the research that is carried out in these biological laboratories, and how these studies relate to the requirements of the Convention," said the head of the Center for Chemical and Biological Threats.
