After the meeting of the heads of defense departments in Brussels, the European Defense Agency (EDA) issued a statement on the need for a significant increase in defense spending of all EU countries.
During the meeting, issues were discussed on the modernization of the common Armed Forces of Europe, which will be achieved through the joint efforts of all member countries. The list includes the creation of long-range air transport, aircraft carriers, tankers to support warships, modern air defense systems. The bloc added that strengthening cooperation in the field of defense is the main priority of building its own security architecture on the European continent.
As the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrel, who combines this position with the head of EDA, noted, only by strengthening defense and increasing spending in this area will it be possible to bring the European Armed Forces to a completely new level, quickly and harmoniously responding to potential external threats of any level.
According to statistics from the European Defense Agency, many European countries still prefer to purchase weapons and equipment for it from other states outside the EU, following the path of least resistance, and therefore there is a need to invest in their own projects in the military sphere. The agency also pointed to the fact that only 18% of all funds allocated for defense programs fall on joint cooperation between EU member states.
