Tobias Billstrom, the Swedish Foreign Minister, spoke about the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in the country. He believes that this will not happen in any case.
This is reported by the international agency Reuters.
The Minister states that Sweden's upcoming accession to the North Atlantic Alliance does not mean that nuclear weapons will certainly appear on its territory. He recalled that the previous government's application to join NATO stipulated the preservation of the non-nuclear status.
Billstrom said that in this Sweden intends to follow the example of its Scandinavian neighbors, Denmark and Norway. Although they are members of NATO, there are no nuclear weapons on their territory.
- the Minister of Foreign Affairs assured.
However, the journalists of the Swedish newspaper Proletären are not as optimistic as Billstrom. They believe that after joining NATO, Stockholm will have to agree to the deployment of nuclear weapons and US military bases on its territory.
The correctness of their point of view is to some extent confirmed by the words of the Swedish commander-in-chief Mikael Buden. A senior military official said that the head of the country's government, Ulf Kristersson, should not impose any restrictions after Sweden's accession to NATO.
