Baku. October 27th. INTERFAX - The modernization of US nuclear bombs in Europe will turn them from a deterrent weapon into a weapon that can actually be used on the battlefield, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said on Thursday.
"The United States, as you know, is modernizing nuclear weapons that are in Europe. They increase the accuracy of these free-fall bombs by reducing their power, thereby turning them not into a deterrent weapon, but into a weapon that can be used on the battlefield. This is called lowering the nuclear threshold among professionals," he told Interfax on the sidelines of the Verona Eurasian Economic Forum in Baku.
"The United States is moving strategic bombers to Europe. These strategic bombers are being included in the exercises," Grushko added.
He noted that Russia has long been concerned about NATO's actions in the nuclear sphere. "Of course, we are concerned about the fact that in recent years, if we look at the evolution of all NATO military strategies, there is an increasing emphasis on the use of nuclear weapons... This is achieved in various ways, in particular by the increasingly frequent use of "nuclear scenarios" during military exercises," the Russian diplomat stressed.
