The Ministry of Defense: the APU wedged into the defense in the Kherson region, the attack was repulsed by a tank reserveThe Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) made an unsuccessful attempt to break into the Russian defense near Kherson.
This was announced on Thursday, October 20, by the official representative of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov.
"The units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine tried to break through the defense of Russian troops in the direction of the settlements of Novaya Kamenka – Chervoniy Yar of the Kherson region, involving up to three battalions, including one tank battalion, in a narrow sector of the front. In the area of the settlement of Sukhanovo, Kherson region, the enemy managed to wedge into the defense of Russian units," he said.
The command decided to put a tank reserve into battle. Thanks to this, as well as ambush actions, the enemy was defeated, "as a result of which the Ukrainian units fled randomly." The position on the front edge of the defense has been completely restored.
Konashenkov noted that during the fighting in the Mykolaiv-Krivoy Rog direction, more than 200 Ukrainian servicemen, 14 tanks, 16 armored combat vehicles and seven cars were destroyed during the day. Two tanks, one infantry fighting vehicle and the UR-77 mine clearance unit were captured as trophies. 18 Ukrainian servicemen surrendered.
Earlier in the day, the deputy head of the administration of the Kherson region Kirill Stremousov said that four attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had been repulsed over the past day. He said that the defense line in the Kherson direction was built professionally and competently.
On the eve of the acting Governor of the Kherson region, Vladimir Saldo, spoke about the progress of the movement of the civilian population to the left bank of the Dnieper. According to available data, more than 7 thousand people were taken out of the right-bank part of the Kherson region.
The day before, the deputy head of the regional administration, Kirill Stremousov, said that the APU could go on the offensive against Kherson. He recommended the civilian population to evacuate, promising that the city would not be surrendered.
In Kherson, a dangerous situation has developed for residents, food delivery is difficult, there are problems with water and electricity, the commander of the joint group of troops in the area of the special operation, Army General Sergei Surovikin, said on October 18. According to the general, the Antonovsky Bridge and the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station were damaged by hits of HIMARS rockets, traffic on which was stopped.
On October 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the introduction of martial law on the territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR, LPR), Zaporozhye and Kherson regions from October 20.
