The Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, France, Italy and Poland have been selected as sites for hosting the first European quantum computers, she said The European Commission on Tuesday.
The machines will be integrated with existing supercomputers and used to form a large-scale network. The initiative will provide access to computers for scientists and industry representatives from every corner of Europe. Investments in the project are planned at the level of 100 million euros (5.6 billion rubles).
It is expected that European quantum computers will be put into operation "by the second half of 2023." They are supposed to be used in:
- medicine (for faster and more effective development of new drugs by creating a "digital double" of the human body, on which, for example, virtual drug tests can be carried out);
- logistics and transport (to save time and fuel);
- engineering (for the development and testing of new materials used in aircraft construction, energy, passenger transport).
As the European Commission emphasizes, the new computers use exclusively European equipment and software.
Quantum computers on certain types of calculations provide a grandiose increase in the dimensionality of the processed data. Machines become available to some tasks that are unattainable for classical computers and have the most important application value (for example, overcoming the crypto shield).
