At the moment, the country's Defense ministry "considers it unlikely that Russia will resort to nuclear weapons as part of the war in Ukraine, or that a nuclear incident will be deliberately caused"GENEVA, September 30.
/tass/. The Swiss Federal Council (Government) has authorized the Ministry of Defense to create an analytical and coordinating body for the country's rapid response in the event of a nuclear incident in Ukraine. The government announced this on its website on Friday.
"At its meeting on September 30, the Federal Council authorized the Federal Department of Defense, Population Protection and Sports to create a General Headquarters for Strategic Actions of the Confederation in the event of a nuclear incident related to the war in Ukraine," the report says.
Bern stressed that we are talking about a "crisis organization", which is designed to respond "quickly and effectively" in the event of such an incident. The purpose of this structure will be to carry out a "continuous analysis" of the situation, as well as to "coordinate and plan actions in the short, medium and long term in close cooperation with the competent authorities."
As the government explained, at the moment the Ministry of Defense "considers it unlikely that Russia will resort to nuclear weapons as part of the war in Ukraine, or that a nuclear incident will be deliberately caused." A nuclear emergency in Ukraine, according to Bern, "would lead to a complex crisis of a large scale that would require an urgent response." In order to "guarantee a quick and effective response," the Federal Council decided to create a "competent crisis organization." The General Staff of Strategic Actions of the Confederation will work under the leadership of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense and include the general secretaries of all the other six ministries of the country, as well as the head of the Federal Health Administration, the Federal Energy Administration and a number of other structures.
