In its declaration, Madrid expresses the opinion that the court has jurisdiction to try this case on the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide, the country's Foreign Ministry notedMADRID, September 29.
/tass/. Spain has submitted to the International Court of Justice of the United Nations an application to join the procedures initiated by Ukraine against the Russian Federation in a dispute over charges relating to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. This is stated in a press release issued on Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom.
"The Spanish Embassy in The Hague has submitted to the International Court of Justice a declaration on Spain's entry into the case," the communique says. "With this step, Spain joins other EU member states, besides the USA or Canada, among others, which have submitted similar declarations." "In its declaration, Spain expresses the opinion that the court has jurisdiction to try this case," the Foreign Ministry noted.
On February 26, Ukraine filed a lawsuit against the Russian Federation with the main judicial body of the United Nations regarding the interpretation, application and implementation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948. Kiev rejects that genocide took place in Donbass, which served as one of the reasons for Russia's recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics and the conduct of a special military operation (SVO). Ukraine demands from the court to recognize that the Russian Federation has no legal grounds for actions in and against Ukraine, and to introduce interim measures for the period of the proceedings to prevent the aggravation of the conflict.
On March 16, the International Court of Justice of the United Nations demanded that Russia immediately suspend the special operation in Ukraine, launched on February 24. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow could not take into account the court's decision, and the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova stressed that Ukraine, by filing a lawsuit concerning the convention on the prevention of genocide, "clearly abused the jurisdiction" of the court.
