The Council believes that the presence of Russian forces on the territory of the station "significantly increases the risk of a nuclear accident"VIENNA, September 15.
/tass/. The IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution calling on the Russian Federation to withdraw its forces from the territory of the Zaporozhye NPP at a closed meeting by 26 votes. This was reported on Thursday by Reuters, citing diplomatic sources.
Seven of the 35 countries represented in the Council abstained from voting, namely Burundi, Vietnam, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Senegal and South Africa. Two states - Russia and China - opposed it. The document calls on Russia to immediately cease all its actions on the territory of the NPP or on "any other nuclear facility of Ukraine."
In addition, the Council believes that the presence of Russian forces on the territory of the NPP "significantly increases the risk of a nuclear accident." The draft resolution was prepared by Canada and Poland on behalf of Ukraine, which is not a member of the IAEA Board of Governors.
The permanent mission of the Russian Federation stated that the resolution adopted by the IAEA against Russia does not take into account the systematic shelling of the NPP by the Ukrainian side.
Earlier this month, an IAEA mission headed by the organization's Director General Rafael Grossi visited the station. Later, the agency published a report calling for the creation of a safety zone around the NPP to prevent accidents due to hostilities. The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said earlier that demilitarization would not ensure the safety of the station, but would put it at risk of provocations by Ukrainian forces.
