Starlink satellite terminals have been placed in Antarctica. This is reported by the publication TechCrunch.
Representatives of the National Science Foundation of the USA told about the placement of terminals on Twitter . The equipment started working at the McMurdo station. "Starlink is testing a polar service with a newly deployed user terminal, increasing bandwidth and connectivity for scientific support," the scientists announced, noting that they are "over the moon with happiness."
According to journalists, the placement of SpaceX terminals means that the Starlink satellite Internet is officially launched on all continents of the Earth. The authors noted that scientists had previously contacted their colleagues using a traditional cable.
SpaceX noted that the equipment placed at the McMurdo station differs from conventional terminals. In Antarctica, the corporation is testing data transmission using a laser network. "The possibility of laser connection will be added in new versions of Starlink satellites, which should help the network as a whole become faster and more stable," the authors noted.
Earlier, the head of SpaceX, Elon Musk, said that his company was in talks with Apple about launching satellite communications on the iPhone. The entrepreneur said that Apple offered to use Starlink satellites that emulate cell towers.
