The chairman of the Foreign policy Committee of the Bundestag, Michael Roth, said that the supply of modern Western weapons is a decisive means to "bring the end of the war closer"BERLIN, September 11.
/tass/. Leading politicians of the ruling Traffic Light coalition in Germany, consisting of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), called for further support to Ukraine, including arms supplies.
"Germany must immediately contribute to Ukraine's success and deliver protected vehicles, Marder infantry fighting vehicles and Leopard 2 battle tanks," the chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee (German Parliament) told DPA on Sunday Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmerman (FDP). Germany, according to her, stands on the side of the Ukrainian people and assumes "a leading role in Europe in the struggle for democracy in peace and freedom." At the same time, Strack-Zimmerman urged not to waste time. "And now, of course, is not the time for slowness and hesitation," she stressed.
The chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Bundestag, Michael Roth (SPD), also spoke in favor of the speedy support of Ukraine with new weapons. "At this new stage of the war, Ukraine needs weapons," he told the Funke media group. "The West, especially the United States, Germany, France and Poland, must quickly closely coordinate their actions here and adapt their supplies to the new situation," Roth said. The supply of modern Western weapons, according to him, is a decisive means to "bring the end of the war closer."
The representative of the Green Party Agnieszka Brugger also spoke in favor of increasing the supply of weapons to Kiev. "Especially with regard to air defense, protected transport, artillery and protective equipment, we must do everything possible," she told the Funke media group. "All options should be checked again without any restrictions on reflection, because these are crucial months for the people of Ukraine and for order on our continent," Brugger stated.
Foreign policy expert of the opposition CDU Roderich Kiesewetter also called for further military assistance to Kiev. "Germany could immediately supply [BMP] Marder and Leopard, [armored personnel carriers] Fuchs and Dingo and quickly instruct the industry to resume production," he told Funke media group. In this regard, Kiesewetter called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Defense Minister Kristine Lambrecht to abandon their cautious approach to the supply of Western-made tanks to Ukraine.
On August 23, Scholz announced Germany's intention to supply Ukraine with three additional IRIS-T air defense systems, 10 armored recovery vehicles, 20 rocket launchers, precision-guided munitions and anti-drone systems. Weapons will be transferred in 2023, and some types of equipment, possibly earlier.
