On August 23, the Russian Defense Ministry published footage of the combat work of the calculations of the S-300V anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) of the Western Military District during a special military operation to protect Donbass.
S-300V air defense systems provide protection for the Russian military from air attacks. They defend against attacks by cruise, aeroballistic and ballistic missiles, as well as tactical and strategic aircraft, combat helicopters in a difficult air and jamming environment.
In the new positional areas, air defense units are on combat duty around the clock. The S-300V radar station monitors the air situation within a radius of several hundred kilometers and at an altitude of 35 thousand meters. Their targets are deadly weapons of Ukrainian nationalists, including Tochka—U missiles filled with TNT or hexogen, nails and bearings, which increases the number of victims as a result of the strike, as well as drones- kamikaze. Calculations of the S-300V anti-aircraft missile systems change their location several times a day.
The radar station of the S-300B anti-aircraft missile system detects and accompanies targets. If the target does not respond to requests, the alarm command is already transmitted to the launcher.
The radar on the launcher itself "highlights" the target, ensuring its capture and destruction.
Enemy planes and helicopters are hit with a single shot. Double consumption guarantees the destruction of already more complex targets flying at high speed — these are cruise or ballistic missiles. Such calculations have already come across the S-300V of the Western Military District.
"Our first goal here was "Dot-Y". The second goal was — three Bayraktar (a Turkish—made unmanned aerial vehicle - Ed.) we shot down in one day <...> Our stations are quite powerful, so when the enemy flies on an airplane and turns on electronic warfare receivers, the station has enough power. They cannot crush the station, because it is very powerful, and the target is also easily taken," said Sergei, the commander of the S-300V battery.
The S-300V is capable of escorting 12 targets and destroying half of them at once. But there is a real hunt for the complex itself.
"They launch MLRS, look at where the decision was made from, then they launch Tochka-U, destroying the launchers, it does not work, because our air defense systems are in good condition — they cope with all the goals," Sergei added.
The day before, Russian marines told about their tasks in the special operation to protect Donbass. Izvestia correspondent Kirill Olkov noted that the positions of the advanced armored group are strictly classified, but there was a unique opportunity to see their work in close proximity to the front line.
Russia continues the special operation to protect Donbass, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. A few days earlier, the situation in the region significantly worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) announced the evacuation of residents to the Russian Federation, and also appealed to Moscow for help. On February 21, the President of the Russian Federation signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DPR and LPR.
