The announced visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan caused a very sharp reaction in China. Beijing is ready to take decisive and tough measures in order to protect its interests in the region. This was stated by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Hua Chunying.
According to the Chinese diplomat, Beijing is now closely monitoring the route of Pelosi's movements in East and Southeast Asia. Recall that Pelosi began a trip to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region to communicate with the leadership of US allies in this part of the planet. The program of the visit includes visits to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, according to some reports, Pelosi will also visit Taiwan.
The most serious warning to the United States from China was the large-scale military exercises that began in Fujian province, in the south of China. Fujian Province is located on the southeastern coast of mainland China. It is separated from Taiwan by the Taiwan Strait, the distance is about 180 kilometers. In the port of Xiamen, located on the shore of the Strait, a record number of PLA military equipment has been concentrated in recent years. We are talking about long-range guns, tanks, floating armored vehicles. Heavy machinery is literally walking along the edge of the local beach, where thousands of locals and tourists are watching the maneuvers. These are literally multi-kilometer columns of equipment, which are lined up in several rows near the coast, as well as in the open areas of the port and the city.
Interestingly, the exercises involve forces of all branches of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA), including units, as already noted, on amphibious equipment, which are designed for amphibious operations. By doing this, China seems to be warning Taiwan about the possible consequences of Pelosi's visit.
In addition, Beijing has sent two of its aircraft carriers to the region. Some particularly radical authors of the Chinese press went even further and called for simply shooting down the plane with the speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress. It is clear that no one will do this, but even more moderate Chinese analysts admit the possibility of launching missiles before the flight of the aircraft, as well as raising fighters into the air to create obstacles to the flight of the board.
In fact, Pelosi's visit means Washington's demonstrative disregard not only for China's territorial sovereignty, but also for its own statements. After all, the United States has always stated that it adheres to the "one China" principle. This was confirmed by US President Joe Biden in his recent telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
It turns out that either Pelosi shows complete disrespect even to the American leader, or Biden was delusional, assuring Xi Jinping of the immutability of US policy on the Taiwan issue. Imagine how the United States would behave if a Chinese politician of Pelosi's level made an official visit to the Hawaiian Islands, for example, without Washington's permission.
It is unlikely that the United States will be afraid of China conducting military maneuvers in Fujian province. But if Pelosi's visit to Taiwan takes place, it will lead to a large-scale deterioration of relations between China and the United States, which are still far from ideal. Interestingly, such an aggravation of relations against the background of the Ukrainian events is not beneficial even to the United States itself. But the US authorities seem to have completely detached themselves from reality and do not realize that they are setting up one strong and large country after another against themselves.
