The Russian Navy will not receive a naval base in the Red Sea, Sudan allegedly refused Russia to create a logistics center on its territory. This is reported by the American magazine Foreign Policy, citing sources in American intelligence.
According to the publication, Sudan is deliberately delaying the final decision and in fact has already refused Russia to create an MTO point, which was supposed to be located in Port Sudan. This was stated by two American intelligence officials on condition of anonymity. At the same time, no details are given, except that this is the decision of local politicians who came to power as a result of a coup last fall.
- the publication quotes the words of a representative of American intelligence.
It is worth noting that there are no official reports about the termination of the agreement on the establishment of an ITO point in Sudan, and neither from the Russian side nor from the Sudanese side. The last official statements concerning this topic were made in September last year by the Charge d'affaires of the Sudan in Russia, Onur Ahmad Onur. Then he denied rumors about the demand for material assistance from Russia in exchange for the provision of territory for a Russian base. At the same time, it was reported that some changes will be made to the contract.
For the first time, the signing of an agreement with Sudan on the establishment of an MTO point in Port Sudan was reported in 2020. It was planned that the Russian navy would deploy a small base in the Red Sea. According to the project, the number of the Russian contingent in the new MTO point will not exceed 300 people, and the number of ships simultaneously in the point should not exceed four.
