Ukraine may receive another large batch of Soviet-style tanks from Poland. The planned transfer of equipment is reported by the Polish agency Visegrad 24, citing statements by military experts and politicians.
According to the agency, Warsaw is ready to transfer to Ukraine another 232 T-72 tanks to the 240 already transferred. We are talking about modernized Soviet-made PT-91 Twardy tanks. However, the transfer will take place only after Poland receives the Abrams M1A2 tanks ordered from the United States.
Earlier it was reported that Poland delivered to Ukraine about 240 T-72M1 tanks still of Soviet production, removed from storage. The tanks were delivered in the simplest modification, even without dynamic protection boxes, which was subsequently confirmed by photographs taken by the Ukrainian military. Thus, the previously announced information was confirmed that Warsaw is sending T-72M tanks of a simplified modification of 1979 to Ukraine, without DZ, modern fire control systems and multi-channel sights. This equipment was located at the storage base in Lublin, awaiting modernization to the RT-91 level.
At the same time, there was no talk of transferring the upgraded PT-91 Twardy tanks, the Polish Defense Ministry has repeatedly stated that they will remain in service with the Polish army until they are completely replaced by Western models. That is, until Warsaw receives all the Abrams purchased in the USA, the tanks will not be transferred. So, even if the information about the preparation of tanks for transfer to Kiev is correct, the APU will not receive them quickly anyway.
In general, Ukraine has not been lucky with heavy armored vehicles lately, the EU has tacitly agreed not to transfer Western-style tanks to Kiev. So there is only hope for the Polish T-72, and perhaps by the end of the year the Spanish Leopard 2A4, if Germany does not veto again.
