Rostec today unites more than 800 scientific and industrial organizations of various directions. Almost 600 thousand employees work at the Corporation's enterprises, among whom there are representatives of interesting, and sometimes simply unique professions. We have already talked about weapons testers, industrial designers, surveyors, cryptographers and other specialties.
The hero of today's issue is an aircraft engine design engineer. Georgy Gogaev, a leading designer for AL-41F-1C and AL-31FP products of the A. Lyulka Design Bureau, a branch of the UEC−UMPO, winner of the "Engineer of the Year-2021" competition in the nomination "Aviation and Cosmonautics (Innovative Technologies)", tells about his experience and nuances of the profession.
− Georgy, tell us why you chose the specialty of a designer? What kind of education did you receive? How many years did you study?
− Like most school leavers, I didn't know exactly where I wanted to go and what direction to connect my life with. Therefore, the choice of the Faculty of aircraft engines and power plants of the Moscow Aviation Institute can be called accidental.
But from the third year, when special subjects began, studying began to rapidly captivate. Now I can say with confidence that I love my profession. If I had gone back, at the time of graduation, I would have repeated my choice.
I studied at the MAI under the specialty program for 5.5 years, after the institute I did military service in the so-called scientific company of the Air Force, based at the VUNTS of the Air Force "Air Force Academy named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky and Yu.A. Gagarin" (Voronezh), and then graduated from the graduate school of the MAI.
− What knowledge and experience are needed in your profession? What are the most important skills and abilities for a designer?
− In my opinion, the most important thing for the development and implementation of a young designer is this is responsibility, perseverance and dedication. I would like to note that the A. Lyulka Design Bureau has a targeted program of cooperation with MAI for the training of students. Thanks to her, I was able to get a part-time job here in my third year. I got a lot of practical knowledge here. The program allowed to gain experience, which became a reliable basis for further development of design competencies − after graduation and employment in the Design Bureau as an employee.
− What is the specifics of your work?
− In the last few years, I have been analyzing the features of the operation of engines of highly maneuverable combat aircraft for the subsequent development of a methodology for monitoring the development of a resource that takes into account the individual characteristics of the operation of each engine.
I am very grateful to my mentors from the strength department of the A. Lyulka Design Bureau and my supervisor, General Designer − Director of the A. Lyulka Design Bureau Evgeny Marchukov, who invested their time and effort in my training. This allowed me to decide on the direction of work.

− What professional achievements are you proud of?
− The most valuable awards that emphasize the importance of my work, I consider the Moscow Government Award and the National Award "Golden Idea". The first was received in the nomination "Aviation and space Technology" for the work "Methodology for monitoring the resource development of the main parts of gas turbine engines of highly maneuverable combat aircraft for low-cycle fatigue, taking into account flight conditions". The use of the technique will reduce operating costs and increase the level of combat readiness of the fleet of equipment of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. And the national award "Golden Idea" was received for his personal contribution to the development of software systems for monitoring loading parameters and analyzing operational information of aviation gas turbine engines. The results of this study are used in the work of the Design Bureau on promising aircraft engines.
− What are your future career plans?
− I plan to develop my professional skills and abilities, as well as continue working in the scientific field.
− What, in your opinion, are the prospects for the profession of a design engineer?
− At all times, the main advantages of the engineering profession have been flexibility and versatility. There are many examples when people of this profession successfully moved into related areas, there are also many examples when engineers achieved recognition by radically changing the field of work. Therefore, it is important not to be afraid to dream, and most importantly − not to be afraid to act.
