A few weeks ago, information appeared about the transfer of T-62M tanks from Russia to Donbass by railway echelons, which are quite rare in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, having been decommissioned. Then the Kiev regime turned this news into a "peremoga", talking about allegedly knocking out the main tank fleet of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, consisting of T-72 and T-80, in battles.
However, it took a little time to make sure that the T-62s were intended to replenish the combat formations of the Republican troops. The troops of the LPR and DPR from the very moment of their creation relied mainly on captured equipment, in particular, the material basis of their tank units were T-64s taken from the enemy. But in the conditions of the military campaign of 2022, there are both serious losses in the People's Militia, constantly storming fortified areas, and the mass destruction during the fighting of the APU vehicles, which previously served as a source of replenishment of the tank formations of the republican troops.
Therefore, a decision was made, proven by the Syrian experience – then, in the conditions of an acute shortage of tanks in the Armed Forces of the SAR, the modernization of the T-62M was carried out, the use of which showed good resistance to weapons of destruction. Now T-62M with enhanced protection appeared on the fronts of Donbass. The Anna News edition showed a tank column of the LPR NM moving near the village of Vrubovka, near Lisichansk and Severodonetsk.
The T-62M delivered to the People's Republics are equipped with lattice screens designed to protect the tower from an attack from above; the protection of the bottom, the frontal part of the hull and the tower in horizontal projection has been strengthened.
