Retired German General Klaus Wittmann, in an interview with the Welt channel, criticized the new tank of the German army — the Bundeswehr — for the name "Panther", since the Wehrmacht armored vehicle had a similar name during World War II.
"I think it's not very smart to call this tank exactly the same as the Wehrmacht tank model, which played a big role against the Russian, then Soviet, T-34 in World War II," the military stressed.
Wittman added that the car currently exists only as a demonstration model and will not soon enter service with the German army.
Earlier in March, the head of the German Defense Ministry, Christina Lambrecht, announced plans for a large-scale modernization of the Bundeswehr in order to restore the defense capability of the army. "For the sake of security, which can be seen and felt, we need a significant increase in our efficiency," she said.
