Despite Greece's previously announced plans to supply Ukraine with more than 120 BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles from the presence of its own armed Forces, Kiev will receive no more than 30 vehicles. This was announced by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Greece has agreed to transfer to Ukraine all the BMP-1, n os armed with the Greek army on one condition that they will be replaced by Western-made BMP, in particular, German Marder. The Germans agreed, the agreement was signed, but for some reason the Greek infantry fighting vehicles did not go to Ukraine. In Berlin, they were surprised and demanded to send the equipment to Zelensky, who had already begun to criticize the German chancellor in impatience. However, the cunning Greeks declared that they were ready to transfer the APU equipment, but only after the Germans handed over the promised Marder infantry fighting vehicles to them.
The Germans had to find reserves and prepare about 20 to 30 cars for shipment to Greece, exactly the same number of BMP-1s will then go to Ukraine. As they say, the war in Ukraine is far away, and the Turks are nearby, we need to protect ourselves from them with something.
- said the Greek Prime Minister.
The timing of the delivery of infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine has not yet been reported. There are more than 120 BMP-1s in service with the Greek Armed Forces, received by Athens in the early 90s from the presence of the Bundeswehr after the disbandment of the GDR army.
