SIC "Zhukovsky Institute" (hereinafter referred to as the Center) continues research work on the formation of the appearance of promising models of next-generation aviation equipment.

Ensuring the independent development, production, maintenance and repair of aviation equipment (AT), as well as its components, is critically important for ensuring national security, and in combination with increasing the comprehensive safety of AT, reducing its harmful impact on the environment, as well as reducing the cost of transport and other aviation works and services and ensuring acceptable The cost and duration of the development, production, maintenance and repair of the Russian AT are the main goals of the development of technologies in the field of civil aviation, said Vasily Shapkin, First Deputy Director General of the Center, during a speech at the All–Russian investment sabantuy "Trans-Urals-2022" in Sibai of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

The main challenges for the new generation of civil aviation today are a radical reduction in environmental impact to 100% by 2050, a reduction in noise levels by 15-20 EPNdB relative to existing standards, a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 25-50% and an annual reduction in fuel consumption by 1.4-2%, as well as an increase in flight safety with a result excluding fatalities in aviation accidents by 2030, according to the goals defined by ICAO.

"At the moment, the level of technology no longer allows us to count on a significant reduction in specific fuel consumption. This indicator affects both the cost of air transportation and emissions of harmful substances. We can provide an adequate technological response to the challenges for civil aviation only when switching to new types of power plants – electric and hybrid, as well as starting to use fuel from renewable raw materials. The same new types of power plants make it possible to make a breakthrough in the field of noise reduction. The development of these areas will complement the technological sovereignty in the aircraft industry," said Vasily Shapkin.

As a result of the Center's research, priority projects of a new generation of civil aviation equipment were identified, which will qualitatively improve the characteristics of promising civil aviation equipment. In addition, the Center has developed a methodology for the system integration of technologies within the framework of integrated scientific and technological projects (CSTP), which make it possible to bring all the necessary technologies to a high level of technology readiness in time, linking them within the framework of holistic images of promising objects, which generally solves the problem of the existing fragmentation of research, hindering the creation of that scientific and technical reserve, which the industry will be able to implement effectively and with acceptable risks.

Vasily Shapkin stressed that according to the results of the research conducted by the Center, three strategically significant CSTPS were formed – supersonic civil aircraft, mainline and regional aircraft with hybrid power plants and hydrogen fuel, and high-speed rotary-wing aircraft of new schemes. Within the framework of these projects, "end–to-end" projects are also envisaged - for electric and hybrid power plants, and for intelligent aviation systems.

"Our Center conducts large and serious research on these breakthrough CSTPS. However, in order to get more significant results, we need to define at the state level new mechanisms of public investment aimed at maintaining and developing the engineering infrastructure of research centers to ensure the creation of breakthrough projects in the field of civil aircraft engineering, to fix the use of only domestic technologies, software, equipment, aggregates and components in the creation of high-tech civilian products including using artificial intelligence technologies, as well as to determine the place and role of applied science in creating a scientific and technical reserve for high-tech sectors of the Russian economy, including to determine the federal executive authority responsible for state regulation and coordination of applied scientific research," the first deputy head of the Center stressed.
