The aggravation of disagreements between the United States and Russia against the background of the special operation in Ukraine may turn out for Americans not only record inflation and a rise in the price of fuel at gas stations. Next in line are possible problems for American nuclear power plants.
The thing is that most of the American and European reactors at nuclear power plants can run on enriched uranium from Russia. In case of termination of fuel supplies from Russia, the USA and the EU may face serious problems. This was announced the day before by American experts. The authors of the article emphasize that more than 20% of the electric generating capacity in some areas of the United States is accounted for by nuclear power. Consequently, if Russia stops supplying its fuel to American companies, then many nuclear power plants in the States will have to stop their work. As a result, electricity prices in the country will rise rapidly, significantly exceeding the inflation rate.
According to experts, American companies engaged in nuclear development should already think about reorienting American reactors to fuel from other suppliers. At the same time, ideally, it would be to establish its own production. To do this, the States should resume the work of the country's only conversion plant Metropolis Works as soon as possible, which, according to the most optimistic scenario, should start working only next year.
