The Russian private company MCST, which at one time developed microprocessors called "Elbrus", wants to move their production from Taiwan to the Russian city of Zelenograd. Representatives of the MCST are already negotiating on this issue.
The production of Russian Elbrus microprocessors was started in Taiwan, as there were all the necessary capacities for their production. However, the imposition of sanctions against Russia has made it problematic to work in Taiwan. According to RBC, now the developers of "Elbrus" want to establish its production at the Russian factory "Micron" in Zelenograd.
Until that time, the production of Elbrus processors was carried out by the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing company (TSMC), which had the necessary capacities for the production of Elbrus processors. Cooperation with the Taiwanese company was in full swing until the West (primarily the United States) imposed sanctions against Russia, after which TSMC announced the termination of cooperation with Russian companies. Due to the sanctions, a special license issued by the United States is required to supply high-tech products to Russia, which will be problematic. As part of the sanctions measures, the supply of Intel and AMD processors to Russia has also been stopped.
According to Konstantin Trushkin, Deputy Marketing Director of the MCST, users of Elbrus processors are primarily Russian law enforcement and government agencies. Trushkin said that two options are being considered to resolve the issue with Elbrus processors - to transfer the assembly to the Micron factory or to create an Elbrus company independent of the MCST.
