Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces Karakaev: "Sarmat" can fly through the North and South Poles
The first serial intercontinental ballistic missiles "Sarmat" will be put on combat duty at the end of autumn 2022. According to the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces of the Russian Federation Sergey Karakayev, the rocket will be able to fly through the North and South Poles, as well as along other trajectories. At the same time, it is unlikely that in the near future it will be possible to create means to intercept these weapons. It is assumed that the Sarmat will remain in service for 50 years.
The new Russian intercontinental ballistic missile "Sarmat" can fly through the North and South Poles, as well as along other trajectories. This was told by the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces of the Russian Federation Sergey Karakaev.
He explained that the possibility of changing the direction of flight is achieved due to the energy capacity of the new missile system.
"From our notorious trajectory through the North Pole, if necessary, it is possible to lay a trajectory through the South Pole, which, in principle, is not protected today. And there are also opportunities for other trajectories - from the point of view of the possibility of launching into outer space," Karakayev said on the Zvezda TV channel.
In addition, the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces believes that in the near future it is unlikely to be possible to create means to intercept these weapons.
"Those qualities - the energy intensity of the energy capabilities of the new missile complex, taking into account the existing combat equipment and the complex of means of overcoming, today say that there is no missile defense for the Sarmat missile complex, since it probably will not exist in the coming decades," he added.
Karakayev noted that one of the elements of overcoming missile defense is the reduction of the rocket acceleration section after launch. According to him, the Sarmat accelerates almost as fast as light solid-fuel rockets, despite the fact that it belongs to the type that is slower to gain speed.
The first launch of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile was carried out from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region on April 20. The training combat units arrived in a given area at the Kura training ground in Kamchatka. The launch tasks were completed in full, and the design characteristics at all stages of the rocket flight were also confirmed. In the Uzhursky missile compound in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, work is underway to prepare the main missile regiment for rearmament with a new missile system, writes TASS.
The Sarmat ICBM was developed at the State Missile Center named after Makeeva (part of Roscosmos), the manufacturer is the Krasmash plant (part of Roscosmos). According to experts, the RS-28 Sarmat ICBM is capable of delivering a separable warhead weighing up to 10 tons to anywhere in the world.
It is expected that the first serial intercontinental ballistic missiles "Sarmat" will be put on combat duty at the end of autumn 2022. "The tests will go on throughout the year, although we plan to put the first serial missiles on combat duty at the end of autumn this year," said Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of Roscosmos.
According to him, the developers of the system are satisfied that Sarmat has tremendous power and high technical parameters. "The power of the Sarmat is huge. Another thing is - let's hope that it will never have to be used," he said.
