Diplomat Polyansky: the military from Azovstal surrendered without conditions
Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said that the "Nazis " of Azov"surrendered without conditions." State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin noted during today's plenary session that the battalion's fighters "should not be exchanged." Leonid Slutsky, the acting head of the LDPR faction, proposed to temporarily return the death penalty for "inhumans".
Dmitry Polyansky, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, said that the Ukrainian servicemen who surrendered, who left the territory of Azovstal, had no conditions put forward.
Earlier, The New York Times reported that the Ukrainian forces "completed the combat mission in Mariupol," and the military "were evacuated, which marked the end of the fighting" at Azovstal.
"I didn't know that in English there are so many ways to convey a simple message: the Nazis [from the Azov division] surrendered without conditions," Polyansky commented on the publication.
Trial or exchange?
Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry, Major General Igor Konashenkov, announced that 265 fighters, including members of the Azov battalion, surrendered during the day at Azovstal. 51 of them have serious injuries. All the doctors in need of help were sent to the Novoazovsk hospital.
A convoy of buses carrying prisoners left Mariupol today. The column was accompanied by armored vehicles. It is not reported where they are being taken.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the withdrawal of part of the military from the territory of the plant and promised to continue work on the evacuation of Ukrainian servicemen and their return to the regions controlled by Kiev.
"We have hope that we will be able to save the lives of our guys. There are seriously wounded among them, they need help," he said. "To bring the guys home, the work continues, and this work requires delicacy. And time," the Ukrainian leader added.
State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, commenting on the possible exchange, stressed that "Nazi criminals should not be exchanged."
The acting head of the LDPR faction Leonid Slutsky proposed to make an exception from the moratorium on the death penalty for the Azov fighters. "Inhumans should be judged! Moreover, if their monstrous crimes against humanity are proven, I will repeat my proposal again - to make an exception from the moratorium on the use of the death penalty in Russia and give the right to the court to consider the possibility of using capital punishment," the deputy wrote in Telegram.
The Ministry of Justice of Russia announced today that the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation will consider the request of the Prosecutor General's Office to recognize the Ukrainian regiment "Azov" as a terrorist organization and ban its activities in Russia.
The trial in the administrative case against "Azov" will be held in the building of the Supreme Court of Russia on May 26.
On May 1, the first civilians were evacuated from Azovstal - about 100 people were transported to Zaporozhye. On May 6, another 50 women, children and elderly people were removed from the plant. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, 18 men, 22 women and 11 children were evacuated from the enterprise during the period from May 5 to May 7.
