Greece has firmly decided to purchase American fifth-generation F-35 fighters, negotiations on the possible supply of aircraft will begin in the near future. This was stated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Greek Prime Minister paid an official visit to the United States, where he was received at the White House by Joe Biden. Following the visit, Mitsotakis and Biden gave a joint press conference at which they spoke about the bilateral relations between Greece and the United States. If we do not go into details, then the entire speech of the Greek prime minister can be reduced to several theses: Greece and the United States are friends and partners; Greece is rearming to strengthen NATO; the United States and Greece are "fighting" together for Ukraine, etc., etc.
In his speech, Mitsotakis stressed that Greece firmly intends to purchase F-35 fighter jets, negotiations will begin in the near future.
- he declared.
It should be noted that the Greeks have already requested the purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the United States and even sent a corresponding request to Washington. It was in November 2020, Greece planned to purchase from 18 to 24 used or new F-35s, but, apparently, at that time, the supply of aircraft to the Greeks was not part of the Americans' plans.
To date, the Greek Air Force is armed with F-16 Block 52, being prepared for modernization, Mirage 2000 and F-4E Phantom II, both of which they intend to write off. At the same time, the Greeks have already purchased French Rafale fighters and plan to purchase American F-35A and British Eurofighter Typhoon.
