In Russia, the Storm 3450E3R rack server appeared under the Depo brand. This is the most localized server, since it is assembled in Russia and is based on the Depo development board, on which the Elbrus-8SV CPU of the domestic MCST is located. All hardware is controlled by the Russian OS "Alt Server" 10 of the company "Basalt SPO".
The Russian company Depo Computers announced the development of a fully domestic software and hardware complex Depo Storm 3450E3RU. This is a full-size server, fully compatible with the Russian operating system "Alt Server" version 10. It itself is based on domestic processors of the Elbrus family, and its production, as reported in Depo Computers, is established in Krasnogorsk, near Moscow.
According to the developers, Depo Storm 3450E3RU has passed all the stages of checking compatibility with the Alt Server 10 system. Under its management, it can be used as an application server or data storage system, and can also be used to solve other corporate tasks.
Prior to the installation of the Alt Server, this Depo Computers server worked on the basis of the Elbrus OS, representatives of the company told CNews. When asked about the possibility of installing another OS on their own, they replied: "At the moment there is no such possibility. There will be no warranty and technical support." They also added that certification with the Russian Astra Linux OS is planned in the future.
Depo Storm 3450E3RU is made in a 2U case for rack mounting. All the main hardware in it is domestic: the motherboard was developed by Depo specialists, and the Elbrus processor, in this case the 8SV model is the brainchild of the Russian company MCST. Alt Server OS is also developed in Russia and is based on the Linux kernel. Together, all these factors make it possible to use this server in the import substitution strategy, including as a replacement for analogues on the server chips of American AMD and Intel, which staged a boycott of the Russian market in the spring of 2022.
As part of the Depo Storm 3450E3RU server, two Elbrus-8CV processors are used. These are 28-nanometer CPUs with eight cores, operating at a frequency of up to 1.5 GHz and designed for use in multiprocessor servers and workstations. They can also be used in onboard computers that are demanding for the speed of processing and transmission of information.
The chip has 16 MB of third-level cache and support for DDR4-2400 memory (four controllers). The CPU debut took place in early 2019, serial production began in 2020. The processor is made in an FCBGA case with dimensions of 59.5 x 43x4.6 mm.
It should be noted that this "Elbrus" and other representatives of the line were produced in Taiwan at the TSMC factory. Since the end of February 2022, their production has been suspended at the request of the American authorities.
CPUs consume up to 110 watts each, so the Depo Storm 3450E3RU server is equipped with two power supplies of 800 watts each. Such a power reserve is made so that the entire disk subsystem has enough power. You can install 12 NL-SAS/SAS disks in a 3.5 or 2.5-inch form factor into the server. Additionally, a separate basket is provided in the back for a pair of 2.5-inch drives (HDD or SSD) with a SATA interface and hot-swappable.
The motherboard has eight connectors for DDR4 ECC RAM. Graphics processing is handled by the Aspeed AST2500 module integrated into the chip.
When using the server as an office storage system, the drives in its composition can be combined into RAID arrays: 0/1/5/6/7.3/10/50/60/70. Of the hardware interfaces, there are four gigabit Ethernet ports on the back panel, next to which there is one USB 2.0 port and one PCI-E x16 2.0, x4 2.0 and x8 2.0 with external access for low-profile expansion cards. Additionally, the server is equipped with VGA, COM ports and a dedicated IPMI 2.0 management port (ASPEED AST2500). All of them are located on the back panel, and two USB 3.0 and one VGA are output to the front panel.
The Alt Server system is part of the Alt family of domestic operating systems, which is backed by the Basalt SPO company. In the past, this is ALT Linux. "Alt Server" in version 10 comes with a set of application programs for servers for various purposes. This system can be installed, among other things, on web servers, DBMS servers, data storage systems, as well as on a universal server in the networks of small companies. Alt Server OS is included in the Unified Register of Russian Programs by the decision of the Ministry of Finance. The entry in the register under the number 1541 was made on September 5, 2016 .
