How the Nebo-SV radar helps to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles
The Russian Defense Ministry showed a video of the calculations of the Buk-M3 anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) and the Nebo-SV radar station (radar) during a special military operation in Ukraine. "Newspaper.Ru" figured out how these complexes work in pairs.
"In the course of combat duty, aerial targets identified as Bayraktar combat unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were detected. As a result of the competent actions of the calculations of the Buk-M3 anti-aircraft missile systems, the targets were taken for escort and destroyed," the commentary to the video says.
As the deputy commander of the Buk-M3 anti-aircraft missile battery said in the video, now the shock and reconnaissance drones of the Ukrainian army are the main target of the Buk-M3 battery.
According to him, during the special operation, two Bayraktar unmanned aerial vehicles have already been hit as part of the calculation, they were "detected and destroyed in a timely manner" during combat work.
The head of the calculation of the Nebo-SV radar station said that it is "all-weather" and "shows itself without complaints" when detecting enemy means. The data of his calculation, transmitted by the Buk-M3 air defense system, made it possible to shoot down six drones during the special operation.
The Nebo-SV radar station determines the azimuth, range, altitude and nationality of aircraft at all altitudes within a radius of several hundred kilometers.
"The Nebo-SV radar works in the meter range, they are designed to detect inconspicuous stealth targets and they do it successfully. Such a station can detect drones, MLRS rockets, airplanes, helicopters. In Ukraine, Nebo-SV works in conjunction with the Buk air defense system - transmits the coordinates of the detected targets to them. At the same time, the main air defense assets of the AFU are S-300 and Buki, but, according to the statement of the Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation Sergey Rudsky, at the moment Russian troops have almost completely destroyed the aviation and air defense system of Ukraine," he told the newspaper. Ru" military expert Dmitry Litovkin.
According to Alexey Leonkov, editor of the Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine, Nebo - SV is an interspecific radar station for monitoring the air situation, which can detect targets at a range of about 350-370 km, see them at altitudes up to 30 km.
"Nebo-SV" consists of four transport units - three cars and a trailer. The first car is equipped with equipment for receiving and transmitting anti-interference signals, auto-recording and transmitting radar information and interfacing with its consumers. The second car is equipped with an antenna-rotary radar device. The third car has a diesel power plant. On the trailer there is an antenna-rotary device of a ground radar interrogator.
"This is a development for the ground forces - a mobile installation that allows the exchange of information on the air situation between all complexes that are part of the military air defense," he told the newspaper.En" Leonkov.
According to him, the principle of operation in conjunction with "Sky-SV" and "Buk" is as follows: the detection range of the target "Buk" is about 100 km, "Sky-SV" gives him data on the air situation for much longer distances.
"This is a drone destroyer. The system helps the "Buk" to work from the "ambush" position. Thus, the aerial target does not suspect that it has already been aimed at it and the incoming missile becomes a complete surprise for it," Leonkov said.
