MOSCOW, February 15. /tass/. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu inspected the exercises of the Russian Navy in the eastern Mediterranean. This was reported on Tuesday in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
"On February 15, the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Army General Sergei Shoigu, inspected the exercises of the Russian Navy in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, conducted as part of a series of naval exercises in operationally important areas of the World Ocean, as well as in the waters of the seas adjacent to the Russian territory," the message says.
It notes that Shoigu, at the logistics center of the Russian Navy in the city of Tartus, heard a report by the Commander-in-chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, on the implementation of joint combat training exercises by Russian ships and aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces to defeat ship groups of a conditional enemy, as well as firing at sea and air targets using artillery and anti-submarine weapons.
Yevmenov reported to Shoigu that more than 15 warships of the Pacific, Northern and Black Sea fleets - the Varyag and Marshal Ustinov missile cruisers, the Admiral of the Fleet Kasatonov, Admiral Grigorovich frigates, the large anti-submarine ships Admiral Tributs, Vice Admiral Kulakov and support vessels, as well as over 30 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces - were involved in the exercises in the Mediterranean.
"During the exercise, measures are being worked out to search for foreign submarines, establish control over navigation in the Mediterranean Sea and the flight of aircraft over it," the Russian Defense Ministry noted.
Protection of the interests of the Russian Federation in the World Ocean
The military department stressed that the main focus of the exercises is to work out the actions of the Navy and Aerospace Forces to protect Russian national interests in the oceans, as well as to counter military threats to the Russian Federation from sea and ocean directions.
"In total, according to Admiral Evmenov's report, more than 140 warships and support vessels, more than 60 aircraft, 1,000 units of military equipment and about 10,000 military personnel are involved in a series of exercises conducted by the Navy," the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The ministry noted that as part of the active phase of the exercise, surface ships, submarines and naval aviation fleets, acting according to a single plan, are working out combat training tasks in the waters of the Okhotsk, Black and Barents Seas.
Together with Sergei Shoigu, the Minister of Defense of Syria, Corps General Ali Ayyub, observed the progress of the Russian Navy exercises in Tartus.
"At the Russian Navy's MTO point in Tartus, Shoigu also inspected the ship repair complex of the Black Sea Fleet, where he set tasks for further improving the infrastructure of the Russian ships' base in Syria, and also laid flowers at the monument to Admiral Fyodor Ushakov," the Defense Ministry noted.
