MOSCOW, Feb 14 - RIA Novosti. During exercises in the Pacific Fleet, a submarine was discovered near the Kuril island of Urup — presumably an American one, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin.
"The boat was expelled from the waters (of Russia - Ed.). Such activity in the east is completely incomprehensible and unjustified," the minister said.
According to him, the submarine entered the country at a sufficiently deep depth, more than four kilometers.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense reported the discovery of a US submarine of the Virginia type in Russian waters. Her crew was given a request to surface in Russian and English, but it was ignored. After that, the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov used "appropriate means", and the submarine "left the territorial waters of Russia with maximum speed."
The US military attache in Moscow was handed a protest note. The Defense Ministry stressed that the actions of the American side are regarded as a gross violation of international law, and recalled that Russia "reserves the right to take all possible measures in its territorial sea to ensure the security" of the state.
