INTERFAX - The appearance of an American nuclear submarine in the territorial waters of the Russian Federation in the Kuril region, which was discovered by a Russian warship, is a serious military incident, retired Admiral Viktor Kravchenko, former chief of the General Staff of the Russian Navy, told Interfax on Saturday.
"This is a serious military incident and a serious violation of international law - the American submarine was in the territorial waters of Russia," Kravchenko said.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the incident occurred on February 12 at 10:40 Moscow time in the area of a planned exercise of the Pacific Fleet forces in the territorial waters of the Russian Federation near the island of Urup of the Kuril Ridge. A US Navy submarine of the Virginia type was found there.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian sailors notified the crew of the US submarine about being in Russian territorial waters of the Russian Federation and demanded that it surface, but the US military ignored it.
"In accordance with the guidelines for the protection of the state border of the Russian Federation in the underwater environment, the crew of the frigate of the Pacific Fleet Marshal Shaposhnikov used appropriate means," the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation said in a statement.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation did not specify what funds are in question.
Kravchenko said that the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov could have used weapons for preventive purposes.
"It could have been bombs to make it surface. We could have used weapons, but not at the submarine to destroy it, but nearby," Kravchenko said.
"In any case, what happened is a serious event," the admiral said.
The official statement of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation states that "the American submarine used a self-propelled simulator to split targets on radar and acoustic control means and left the territorial waters of the Russian Federation at maximum speed."
On Saturday evening, the Russian Defense Ministry said that because of the incident, the US military attache in Moscow was summoned to the Russian military department.
The incident occurred against the background of a crisis in relations between Russia and NATO.
Earlier on Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced telephone conversations between the head of the military department, Sergei Shoigu, and the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin.
