The Ministry of Defense handed a note to the US military attache due to the violation of the state borders of the Russian Federation by an American submarine. This was reported on Saturday, February 12, in the Russian department.
"On February 12, a note was handed to a representative of the Office of the Military Attache for Defense at the US Embassy in Moscow in the Main Directorate of International Military Cooperation of the Russian Ministry of Defense in connection with the violation of the state border of the Russian Federation by a US Navy submarine," the statement says.
At the same time, the representative of the US Defense Ministry was told that the actions of the American submarine are regarded as a gross violation of international law. The Russian ministry added that the provocative actions of the US Navy ship created a threat to the national security of the Russian Federation.
The incident occurred earlier in the day in the territorial waters of Russia near the Kuril island of Urup. A Virginia-class US Navy submarine was found there. The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that the American submarine ignored the demands to leave Russian waters. The frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov used special means in connection with the violation of the territorial waters of the Russian Federation by the submarine.
According to Izvestia, an American submarine was trying to monitor the exercises of the Pacific Fleet. However, she was discovered even before she started the task.
