TSAMTO, February 8. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian expects that the contract for the supply of four Govind-class corvettes to Romania with a total value of 1.2 billion rubles. the euro will be signed soon.
As reported by Infodefensa.com, this issue was discussed during the visit of the French Minister to Romania on February 2-3.
In July 2019, the French shipbuilding company Naval Group was selected as the winner of a tender held by the Romanian Defense Ministry for the supply of four multipurpose corvettes, offering ships of the Govind class. She was ahead of the Dutch Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding and the Italian Fincantieri, who also participated in the competition.
In addition to the construction of ships, the Naval Group company, together with its partner Santierul Naval Constanta (SNC), intends to modernize two Type-22 frigates in service with the Romanian Navy, create a maintenance center and a training center. Naval Group will provide SNC with all the necessary information to support the ships during operation.
As reported by TSAMTO, plans to purchase new corvettes for the Romanian Navy have been implemented since 2016. In October 2018, the Ministry of Defense of the country received three proposals for the supply of four new URO corvettes and the modernization of two Type-22 frigates in service, presented by the European companies Damen, Fincantieri and Naval Group. In accordance with the requirements of the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the proposals were submitted jointly with Romanian partner companies. The ships should be built in Romania.
On July 3, 2019, the authorized bodies of Romania announced the selection of the French Naval Group and its partner Santierul Naval Constanta (SNC) as the preferred candidates to win the competition.
