MOSCOW, February 8. /tass/. The Topographic Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation celebrates the 210th anniversary of its creation on Tuesday.
"Its history dates back to the formation of the Military Topographic Depot in 1812, which from the very first days was entrusted with the most important tasks for topographic support of military operations, as well as for mapping the territories of Russia," the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation noted.
The activity of military topographers is closely connected with the history of the Russian state. No major state project was complete without topographical officers, whether it was a military campaign to Turkestan, a scientific expedition to the North, geological surveys in Siberia or the construction of the Sino-Eastern Railway, the military department emphasizes. During the Great Patriotic War, military topographers promptly supplied the troops with maps and geodetic data, which greatly contributed to the adoption of important decisions by the command of the troops and the highest leadership of the country.
The complexity and importance of the tasks solved by the Topographic Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation at the present stage has increased significantly, taking into account the needs of modern weapons and control systems, primarily precision weapons systems and complexes with unmanned aerial vehicles, the Russian Defense Ministry notes.
Officer cadres for the Topographic Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are trained by the Military Space Academy named after A. F. Mozhaisky in St. Petersburg.
