Moscow. February 6. INTERFAX - The situation in Libya was discussed on Sunday in Addis Ababa by the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Mikhail Bogdanov and Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya Mohammed Menfi.
Bogdanov and Menfi met on the sidelines of the 35th session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry reports.
"During the exchange of views on the current situation in Libya, the Russian side confirmed its unwavering commitment to further contribute to the comprehensive and sustainable stabilization of the situation in this country," the statement said.
"At the same time, the importance of ensuring the inclusive nature of the inter-Libyan dialogue was emphasized, in which all influential political forces aimed at preserving the territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty of the Libyan state should participate," the Foreign Ministry informed.
They also noted "the need to consolidate international support for the efforts of Libyans in the interests of advancing the political process with the coordinating role of the UN and on the basis of relevant resolutions of its Security Council," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
In Libya, for a long time, two executive authorities existed in parallel: the Government of National Accord in Tripoli, in the west of the country, and the interim cabinet in the east of the country, supported by the army of Marshal Khalifa Haftar. According to Western media, Haftar's forces were supported by Russia, France, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt. Turkey, Qatar and Italy, in turn, supported the government in Tripoli.
In October 2020, in Geneva, representatives of the warring parties signed an agreement on a permanent ceasefire. It was also agreed that foreign fighters were to leave the country under the supervision of the UN within 90 days after the ceasefire. But so far this point has not been fulfilled.
