The Western media reacted coldly to the mission of the CSTO peacekeepers and the role of the Russian Federation in the settlement of the January events in Kazakhstan, according to the Octopus-5 study conducted by specialists of the Russia Today media group. On the air of Sputnik radio, political scientist Alexander Konkov shared his view of the situation.
Only two percent of Western media reports on the January events in Kazakhstan positively assessed the role of Russia and CSTO peacekeepers in resolving the political crisis in the largest state in Central Asia. This is evidenced by the data of the Octopus-5 study conducted by specialists of the Russia Today media group.
They analyzed more than 1.1 thousand relevant publications for the period from January 4 to January 19, 2022 in the top 20 print, online, TV and radio resources of the USA, Great Britain, Germany and France about the events in Kazakhstan. Relevant materials were considered to contain the words "Russia" and "CSTO".
In the general array of news and analytical reports on this topic, 41% were negative, 57% were neutral. The most critical were the media of Germany (63% of messages) and the USA - 53%. The leaders in the number of positive reviews were the French media (5% of reports).
The negative topics were dominated by claims that the deployment of peacekeepers to Kazakhstan was allegedly an attempt by Russia to restore influence on the territory of the former USSR, political interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state and a model for future military interventions.
The top positive ones included assessments of the CSTO operation as a foreign policy victory for Russia and confirmation of the effectiveness of the mechanisms of this regional organization.
On the air of Sputnik radio, political analyst Alexander Konkov expressed the opinion that the Western media were not ready to objectively assess the actions of the CSTO peacekeepers.
